EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps people heal from difficult or traumatic experiences that are still affecting them today.
If you've ever felt like you're stuck in the past and emotionally reacting to things that "shouldn't" bother you anymore, EMDR is designed to help your brain reprocess those memories so they lose their emotional charge, and you can move forward with more clarity and confidence.
How EMDR Works
Our brains are naturally wired to process and heal from difficult events. But sometimes, especially during trauma or high stress, memories don’t get properly processed. They can get “stuck,” showing up as anxiety, flashbacks, low self-esteem, or strong emotional triggers.
EMDR helps your brain do what it couldn’t at the time: make sense of what happened, put it in the past, and store it in a more adaptive and less distressing way.
It does this by gently activating the memory while using bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping, or sound, which helps the brain reprocess the experience.
EMDR starts like any therapy — we get to know you, your goals, and what’s going on in your life. Together, we decide if EMDR is the right fit.
Before we process anything difficult, we spend time helping you feel resourced, grounded, and safe. You’ll learn skills to manage emotions, feel more in control, and reconnect with a sense of calm.
We’ll also identify the key experiences that may still be affecting you.
Once you're ready, we choose a memory to work on. You’ll be asked to focus on a specific image, thought, feeling, and body sensation related to that memory.
While holding the memory in mind, I’ll guide you through sets of bilateral stimulation (usually eye movements or gentle tapping). Your brain does the work, it may bring up images, thoughts, emotions, or body sensations. There’s no “right” way for this to go, it’s a gentle unfolding process.
You are always in control, and we’ll go at your pace.
We’ll always end sessions with time to reground and stabilise, so you don’t leave feeling overwhelmed. We’ll help you reflect on any insights and check how you’re feeling before you go.
